Senecio rowleyanus
If ever there was a plant designed to trail dramatically off shelves and into our hearts, it’s the String of Pearls. With its cascading stems of bead-like leaves, this succulent is a favourite for hanging pots, high ledges, and anyone who loves plants with a little personality.
Why We Love It
String of Pearls is instantly recognisable. Its round leaves aren’t just cute, they’re clever. Each “pearl” stores water, making this plant surprisingly drought-tolerant and well-suited to indoor life. When happy, it grows fast and long, creating lush green curtains that soften any space.
Light
Bright, indirect light is the sweet spot. A few hours of gentle morning sun are welcome, but harsh afternoon sun can scorch the pearls. Too little light, and the plant will stretch and lose its compact, full look.
Water
Less is more. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Overwatering is the quickest way to lose a String of Pearls, as the shallow roots are prone to rot. In winter, watering can be reduced even further.
Tip: If the pearls start to look shrivelled, it’s usually a sign of underwatering. If they turn mushy or translucent, that’s overwatering.
Soil & Pot
Excellent drainage is non-negotiable. Use a cactus or succulent mix and choose a pot with drainage holes. Shallow pots work well, as the roots sit close to the surface.
Temperature & Humidity
This plant prefers warm, dry conditions. Average indoor temperatures are perfect, and they don’t need added humidity. Keep it away from cold drafts and frost; they aren’t a fan of the chill.
Growth & Maintenance
String of Pearls is low-maintenance but benefits from the occasional tidy-up. Trim back leggy or damaged stems to encourage fuller growth. Those cuttings can easily be propagated—just lay them on the soil, lightly press in, and wait.
Flowers
Yes, it flowers! Under the right conditions, String of Pearls produces small white blooms with a cinnamon-like scent. They’re subtle but charming and a sign of a very happy plant.
Common Problems
