About this plant

Common lilac originates in south-eastern Europe and needs a cold winter to bloom. Bloomerang hybrids are more compact, flower again after the main spring flush and have better mildew resistance. Lilacs make wonderful cut flowers.

Best spots

Sunny gardens, entryways where you can enjoy the scent, and large pots (Bloomerang) in cool climates.

Right after spring flowering. Later pruning removes next year's buds.

Will lilac grow in warm climates?

It needs a cold winter; low-chill varieties are best in mild areas.

Can I grow it in a pot?

Yes, choose a compact Bloomerang.

How long does it take to flower?

Usually 2–3 years after planting.
