Information
What’s in a name? We think quite a lot. But what about those names favoured by B-grade celebrities and teenage parents? This collection of hand-thrown Thai finish pots & planters is our tribute to the bad names of this world. Just like their namesakes, each pot is raw, earthy, and uniquely individual.
Crafted in Thailand, using techniques passed down for centuries, these pots are shaped by hand, then fired in a traditional wood kiln, giving them their distinctive character.
Made from natural clay, each pot embraces the beauty of imperfection and has one drainage hole in the base.
Please note these planters are not designed to be planted with plants that have aggressive expansive root system such as Strelitzias. The outward pressure from the roots will result in cracks.
Due to the handmade nature of this pot, the colour and finish may vary and the size can vary +/- 20% from the specifications quoted. See examples of product finishes here. Please contact the sales team if you'd like to hand select your pot, otherwise the pot will be picked at random.
HAND THROWN
Every piece begins on the wheel, shaped by hand rather than machine.
WOOD FIRED
Wood fired in traditional brick kilns, each planter passes through flame and ash.
ONE OF A KIND
Because each piece is thrown, fired, and finished individually, no two planters leave the kiln alike.
A TRUE STATEMENT
These are not planters that blend in - considered, deliberate, and unmistakably their own.
HAND THROWN BY ARTISANS
Shaped on the wheel, not stamped from a mould. Mass production can replicate a shape. It can't replicate a hand.
The matte finish photographs well but in person it's even nicer, especially once the light hits it in the evening. Shipping was quicker than I expected too.
I needed to change my delivery details last minute not ideal I know and the team handled it without any fuss at all. Responded quickly, sorted it out, and everything still arrived on time. That's the kind of service that makes you a loyal customer. The pots look incredible too.
The quality of these pots is fantastic! I visited the showroom prior to making my purchase, and I was just blown away with how beautiful the finish was.
The different finishes of the Bad Names range is so unique. I had been looking for individual unique pots for a while, and I am very glad I came across The Balcony Garden.

I've been bringing my clients into the Sydney showroom for 4 years and the team is super helpful. They always go out of their way to work with my clients.
Thank you Balcony Gardens for all your assistance in the showroom. My client is very happy with her pots. Not only do they look gorgeous in her space, but are also of very good quality. I will definitely be recommending and hopefully specifying to more clients.
They are durable, well-made, and last for years. I've been using them for two years now and it makes watering the plants really easy. They were also really affordable!
I ordered a set of pots from The Balcony Garden and was really impressed. The website was easy to navigate and I loved that they had a live chat option!
Why does the colour and finish vary between pots in the Bad Names Range?
Every pot is hand-thrown from natural clay and fired in a traditional wood kiln in Thailand, so no two come out exactly alike. Variations in colour, texture, and surface marking are a result of the firing process, not a defect — it's what gives each piece its individual character. You can see examples of the natural finish variation here.
Is natural clay durable enough for permanent outdoor use?
Yes, these pots are wood-fired using techniques passed down for generations in Thailand, which gives the clay its strength and durability for outdoor conditions. As with any natural clay pot, it's a good idea to avoid trapped water, so make sure drainage isn't blocked.
Can I choose my own pot rather than have one selected for me?
Yes — contact our sales team after you order and we can help you hand-select your pot based on the specific finish and character you're after. Otherwise, we'll select one at random from current stock.
How many drainage holes does each pot have?
Each pot has one drainage hole in the base. If you'd like additional drainage, our optional drainage kit can help. You can purchase them on this page with your planter.
Are these planters suitable for indoor use?
Absolutely. Our Bad Names Range has featured in both landscapes and interior projects.
Why are some pots in this range so much larger and more expensive than others?
Each planter's price reflects its size, the amount of hand-forming and kiln time involved, and the complexity of the shape — the larger, more sculptural pieces like Chad and Chardonnay take considerably more time and skill to produce than the smaller forms.
