Myles Montgomery is the founder of a multidisciplinary design and visualisation team working across the fields of architecture, landscape, product and interactive media. His company works with architects, developers, brands and organisations to create emotive, engaging, atmospheric media by which to represent their messages. Myles’ career has seen him develop his craft in practices across New Zealand and Australia, before starting his own practice in sunny Nelson.

So, who is Myles Montgomery?
I am the creative director of our visualisation studio of the same name in Nelson, New Zealand. I call Nelson home in the Top of South Island of New Zealand. When I’m not pushing pixels and directing visuals, I can be found on our boat in the Marlborough Sounds or on a golf course in the vicinity. I’ve been in and around the design profession for all my professional life and have found my niche in the creation of visuals for Antipodean creatives.
How did you originally get into the type of work you do?
Through my studies in Industrial Design I would help at my father’s Architectural firm in Wellington producing 2D and 3D illustrations. It was great as I learnt a lot of about architecture and design empathy for the built form. I later moved to Melbourne and in searching for industrial design jobs found there was more opportunity at the time for architectural visualisers. I landed a job at large firm and cut my teeth on some great projects alongside a talented team. I was later asked to establish a visualisation studio for a group of photographers in Melbourne which took me from the design side to the marketing side of the property/architecture industry.
Who is a typical client?
A typical client is a creative, architect, designer, owner or developer wishing to represent their project. Typical projects these days are multi-residential developments where we work with the developer, architect, interior designers, landscape architect and creative agency to produce a range of imagery for their marketing campaign.
How has your work/industry changed over the last 5 years?
What we are trying to achieve has not changed in the past 5 years, striving to produce the best visuals possible. The way we go about producing this imagery has changed remarkably with advances in software, the hardware we use and the media these can be displayed upon. We now have a lot more tools that can be used to represent designs, whether that is traditional still imagery, animations, immersive VR experiences or 360 tours.
What cheers you up?
Spending time with my family and friends, getting on or in the water are what I enjoy the most.
What is the most played song on your playlist?
Degs – Poveglia & In Time by Lake Jons have both been soundtracks to my life over the past 12 months.

What’s the first thing you do every day?
Stretch and make a stovetop espresso. Love a morning ritual.
What do you love about where you live?
We live above the beach and our studio is 4 minutes walk down the hill next to the best coffee in town (Raglan Roast). I get to see my daughter at lunch most days and it’s one of the sunniest places in the country!
